Recent Updates at the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of Ohio (1 hour) 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Former Ohio Solicitor General Benjamin Flowers will update participants on recent developments in the appellate courts. Flowers will discuss specific cases of interest to the business community in the Supreme Court of the United States, Supreme Court of Ohio, and U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Luncheon Speaker (0.5 hours) 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.

OII VP, Government Affairs and General Counsel will discuss recent legislative developments, future legislation, and provide updates on insurance-focused cases in Ohio courts.

Insurance Bad Faith Update (1 hour) 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.

Greg O’Brien, partner at Cavitch, Familo & Durkin in Cleveland, will present updates on the state of bad faith law in Ohio. O’Brien is a recognized expert in the field and has presented on this topic at past OII CLE Symposiums.

Public Nuisance Litigation Discussion (1 hour) 1:45 to 2:45 p.m.

It is no secret that one of the hottest topics in litigation is the proliferation of public nuisance claims against businesses.  This phenomenon is pronounced in Ohio and is also playing out in state and federal courtrooms all over the country.  This presentation will address the developments of public nuisance litigation and future implications.

Break 2:45 to 3 p.m.

Professionalism Discussion with Judge Craig Baldwin (1 hour professional conduct credit) 3 to 4 p.m.

The practice of law has changed greatly since the pandemic.  Attorneys are still called on to practice with empathy and professional courtesy.  Veteran attorney and jurist, Judge Craig Baldwin of the Ohio Fifth District Court of Appeals will provide insights, tools, and techniques to improve how attorneys interact with each other and generally conduct amongst the bar.

Judicial Panel (1 hour) 4 to 5 p.m.

Each year, the OII CLE Symposium hosts an impressive panel of judges to discuss the current state of litigation and best practices in courtrooms throughout Ohio. This year’s panel includes:

The Downtown Columbus parking website allows you to find an open garage and/or reserve a space ahead of time for some garages. In the search bar in the upper right corner, type “Renaissance Columbus Downtown Hotel” to find a garage or flat lot close to the event space. Some parking areas are daily and some are hourly based on capacity; hover over the parking option you are interested in and it will display all of the parking options and pricing.


The OII Mid-Year Meeting will be taking place the day after the CLE. If you need lodging the room block at a group rate can be made here prior to February 13.
